On Saturday May 23rd and Sunday May 24th 2009 the Gallipolis Police Department conducted two separate sobriety checkpoints with the assistance of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Gallia County Sheriffs Office, Gallipolis Municipal Court Probation Department and the Gallia County Prosecutors Office. The checkpoints were conducted inside the City of Gallipolis on State Route 588 and State Route 160. According to Sgt. Matt Champlin of the Gallipolis Police Department during the checkpoints 124 vehicles were contacted by officers resulting in arrests ranging from seatbelt and child safety seat violations to arrests for operating while impaired and child endangerment charges.
We count this checkpoint operation as a total success and wish to thank all of the personnel that participated in the operation. Our purpose behind conducting operations such as this is not only to keep our roadways safe, but also to ensure the public that we serve that we maintain a zero tolerance stance on offenses that affect the safety of our community.
