Federal Funds from Ohio Traffic Safety Office help save lives in Gallia County
Gallipolis – Gallia County Sheriff announced today the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s (ODPS) Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) awarded over $23,000.00 in federal traffic safety funding to the Gallia County Sheriff for federal Fiscal year 2010.
“These funds are critical to ensure that we are doing everything possible to keep our community safe” said Sheriff Browning. “This will enable us to put more deputies on patrol in our township and village areas and monitor traffic activities in reduced speed zones such as school areas and rural roads”. The funds are passed through the OTSO from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support the efforts of safety partners statewide and focus on safety priority areas such as restraint use, impaired driving, motorcycle safety and youthful drivers.
In the past three years fatalities on Ohio’s roads have decreased to near record lows. There were 1,191 fatalities on Ohio’s roads in 2008, down from 1,257 in 2007 and 1, 239 in 2006. So far to date there have been two “on the roadway” traffic fatalities in Gallia County and one “off roadway” traffic fatality. Sheriff Browning hopes that the flexibility built into the grant will also improve call response to our more outlaying townships.
