NEWS RELEASE

Gallipolis January 11, 2007 - Gallia County Sheriff David L. Martin and Academy Coordinator - Deputy Fred Workman, are pleased to announce the first annual graduating class of the Gallia County Citizens Police Academy.  On December 7th, 2006, twenty six students received certificates of completion.

The Citizens Academy was designed by Sheriff Martin and his staff to provide Gallia County Citizens who are interested in learning more about how their law enforcement operates and the challenges the Sheriff's Office face in today's world.  Participants in each session committed to meeting for three (3) hours, one (1) night per week for six (6) weeks, to learn about the aspects of law enforcement, and the criminal justice system in Gallia County.

The topics covered included: training standards for law enforcement officers, media relations, jail operations, patrol functions, DUI enforcement, victims rights, domestic violence, criminal law and procedure, major crimes investigations, meth labs, use of force, special weapons and tactics (swat team), emergency management operations, sheriff’s tip line, and web page.

The purpose of the Citizens Academy is to develop positive relations between law enforcement and community through education.  The goals are to create a growing nucleus of responsible, well-informed citizens who have the potential of influencing public opinions about law enforcement practices and services.   Citizens will gain an appreciation of the problems and challenges facing law enforcement, and have an opportunity to offer comments and ideas regarding solutions.

The graduates are as follows: Charles Adkins, Richard Adkins, Robert Bloomfield, John Brewer, Becky Brown, Kenneth Casteel, Kelley Champlin, Jeffrey Efaw, Phyllis Fowler, Virginia Garber, Edward Griffin, Annette Holliday, Michelle Miller, Edna Milstead, Ron Parcell, Rita Pauley, Charles Peck, Michael Plymale, Paul Rossiter, Jean Smith, William Stapleton, George Twyman, Todd Wiseman, Leslie Young, Charles Vanco, and Don Hammond.

The Sheriff would like to thank Director Shirley Doss and the staff at the Senior Resource Center and the many instructors and staff from his office, and others from the Gallipolis Police Department, Gallia County Prosecutor’s Office, Gallipolis Municipal Court, Gallia County Emergency Management Agency, Ohio State Highway Patrol Post 27, and the Gallipolis Victim/Witness Advocate who made the Academy a great success.

According to Martin, the graduating students gave very positive feedback on the program.  It was so well received that Sheriff Martin and Deputy Workman will schedule another Citizens Academy in 2007, the dates and times will be announced sometime within the near future on the Sheriff’s website and the Gallipolis Tribune.
