Gallipolis
– January 11, 2007 - Gallia County Sheriff David L. Martin and
Academy Coordinator - Deputy Fred Workman, are pleased to announce the first
annual graduating class of the Gallia County Citizens Police Academy.
On December 7th, 2006, twenty six students received
certificates of completion.
The Citizens
Academy was designed by Sheriff Martin and his staff to provide Gallia
County Citizens who are interested in learning more about how their law
enforcement operates and the challenges the Sheriff's Office face in today's
world. Participants in each session committed to meeting for three (3)
hours, one (1) night per week for six (6) weeks, to learn about the aspects
of law enforcement, and the criminal justice system in Gallia County.
The topics covered
included: training standards for law enforcement officers, media relations,
jail operations, patrol functions, DUI enforcement, victims rights, domestic
violence, criminal law and procedure, major crimes investigations, meth
labs, use of force, special weapons and tactics (swat team), emergency
management operations, sheriff’s tip line, and web page.
The purpose of the
Citizens Academy is to develop positive relations between law enforcement
and community through education. The goals are to create a growing nucleus
of responsible, well-informed citizens who have the potential of influencing
public opinions about law enforcement practices and services. Citizens
will gain an appreciation of the problems and challenges facing law
enforcement, and have an opportunity to offer comments and ideas regarding
solutions.
The graduates are
as follows: Charles Adkins, Richard Adkins, Robert Bloomfield, John Brewer,
Becky Brown, Kenneth Casteel, Kelley Champlin, Jeffrey Efaw, Phyllis Fowler,
Virginia Garber, Edward Griffin, Annette Holliday, Michelle Miller, Edna
Milstead, Ron Parcell, Rita Pauley, Charles Peck, Michael Plymale, Paul
Rossiter, Jean Smith, William Stapleton, George Twyman, Todd Wiseman, Leslie
Young, Charles Vanco, and Don Hammond.
The Sheriff would
like to thank Director Shirley Doss and the staff at the Senior Resource
Center and the many instructors and staff from his office, and others from
the Gallipolis Police Department, Gallia County Prosecutor’s Office,
Gallipolis Municipal Court, Gallia County Emergency Management Agency, Ohio
State Highway Patrol Post 27, and the Gallipolis Victim/Witness Advocate who
made the Academy a great success.
According to
Martin, the graduating students gave very positive feedback on the program.
It was so well received that Sheriff Martin and Deputy Workman will schedule
another Citizens Academy in 2007, the dates and times will be announced
sometime within the near future on the Sheriff’s website and the Gallipolis
Tribune.
