The Gallia County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a shooting that occurred this morning in Springfield Township, in Gallia County at approximately 9:25 a.m. Deputies and paramedics were dispatched to 9746 Bulaville Road where the victim Carl Myers. 51, was located. It was quickly determined that the actual shooting occurred at 1863 Prospect Church Road which is located diagonally across from the Bulaville Road address. The investigation revealed that Mr. Myers had been in a physical altercation with his Wife, Waneta Myers, 50, at the Prospect Church Road location. During this time Sophia Chattin, 28, Huntington, West Virginia, who was at the Prospect Church Road address shot Mr. Myers in the thigh. Sophia is the daughter of the Myers’.
Mr. Myer’s was transported to Holzer Medical Center and then transferred by Med-Flight.
Waneta Myers was charged with two counts of Domestic Violence.
Sophia Chattin was charged with Felonious Assault.
Both are currently incarcerated.

Gallipolis, Ohio – May 25, 2013 – Every year an estimated 800,000 children are reported missing to authorities in the United States. Of that number, 200,000 are abducted by family members, and 58,000 are abducted by non-family members. The primary motive for non-family abductions is sexual. Each year many children are the victims of the most serious abductions, taken by non-family members and either murdered, held for ransom or taken with the intent to keep the child.
May 25, was proclaimed by the US government as national missing children’s day in 1983 as a time for parents to take just 25 minutes to talk to their children about how to be safe and prevent tragedy from striking in our community.
Take 25 is a child safety campaign that helps parents with ideas on how to talk to their children about safety issues. The campaign website is www.take25.org.
Gallia County Sheriff Joe Browning stated that he “supported the efforts of the federal and state authorities in educating children to help prevent child abductions.” Parents have an opportunity to talk to their children today about the issue. May 25 was chosen in honor of New York missing child case involving Etan Patz who went missing on his way to school in 1979 and was never found.
Sheriff Browning urges parents to download the information at the take25.org website and use it talk to children without making them paranoid, but yet aware of dangers.
This year the Sheriff’s Office is also making available to area youth organizations a viewing of the movie “Finding Faith”. “Finding Faith” is full length film about the dangers of on line relationships for teens. The Safe Driving Program is a classroom driver improvement course for drivers aged 50 and older, although there is no age limit. This program developed by AARP can sharpen driving skills, help prevent accidents and keep older drivers on the road longer and more safely.
For many people, the Safe Driving Class can also save money on car insurance. Ohio Law permits auto insurance carriers to offer a discount on premiums to qualified graduates of the approved AARP class. Policyholders should contact their carriers for more information about such discounts.
Registration forms can be completed by calling Sheriff Joe Browning’s office at 740-446-4612 Ext: 352. The cost of the class is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non members. Checks are to be made payable to AARP.

During the investigation deputies were led to the residence of 103 McCully Road, Gallipolis, OH to conduct a search. During a search of the home deputies recovered heroin, methamphetamine, weapons, and cash proceeds from drug trafficking.

Charges are expected to be filed on two male suspects after consulting with the Gallia County Prosecutor’s Office. The anticipated charges with be drug trafficking, possession of drugs, and weapons under disability. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by the Gallipolis Police Department and the Gallia-Meigs Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
